What is Public Health?

Public health goes beyond traditional health care by addressing the numerous sources creating barriers to greater physical, mental, behavioral, social, and community health. These efforts include, but are certainly not limited to:

  • Connecting people and families with food and housing resources
  • Supporting families and their young children
  • Immunizing the public against preventable diseases
  • Developing pathways to health care coverage
  • Providing sexual health support in a non-judgmental environment
  • Breaking stigmas surrounding behavioral health and substance use
  • Creating a healthier environment – inside and outside of the home

Through a focus on prevention and community-led initiatives, the Adams County Health Department is leading the charge toward creating a healthier community and future where everyone can live, work, and play.
