The rising number of firearm deaths and injuries continues to be a serious and growing concern for Colorado’s Denver Metro communities. In recognition of National Injury Prevention Day, November 18, your local public health and hospital partners want to provide important information to their communities about this data. In Colorado, deaths due to suicide account for 70.7% of intentional firearm injuries for people of all ages. Among youth, one in five Colorado teens reports being able to access a loaded gun without adult permission in under one hour. Preventing unintentional injuries, especially for kids, is possible by using secure storage to prevent unsupervised access to firearms.
This collaborative has committed to ensuring that Denver Metro communities continue to have access to firearm safety resources, mental health support, and information on secure firearm ownership and storage.
You can save a life by storing firearms securely at home and in vehicles unloaded, locked, and with ammunition stored separately.
Together, we can make a positive impact and decrease the risk of death or injury from a firearm. Refer to the resources below to join the efforts of your local public health and hospitals to keep our Denver Metro communities safer!
