What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a viral disease that spreads very quickly. People may feel a variety of cold-like symptoms 2 to 14 days after being exposed to COVID-19 from another person. Symptoms usually last for 1 to 14 days. COVID-19 can cause hospitalization and death, which can be prevented with the COVID-19 vaccine. Some people, including those with minor or no symptoms, may develop post-COVID conditions — also called “Long COVID.”

Symptoms of COVID-19

  • Fever
  • Cough

How COVID-19 Spreads

COVID-19 most commonly spreads when a person who has COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, or talks next to others. COVID-19 can also be spread when someone touches objects or surfaces that have COVID-19 on them and then touches their nose or mouth.

How You Can Prevent COVID-19

  • Vaccines are the most effective way to prevent COVID-19 hospitalization and death. Vaccines are available through our immunizations clinic, pharmacies, and your health care provider.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer.
  • Cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow, and wash your hands immediately after.

Think You Have COVID-19?

Testing for COVID-19 and Take-Home Test Availability

COVID-19 tests are available through your health care provider, at urgent cares, and pharmacies. The Adams County Health Department also offers free take-home COVID-19 tests at most of our locations. We are unable to mail tests to you.

If you test negative for COVID-19 at home, but still have symptoms or believe you have the virus, it is recommended you take another test 48 hours later to confirm your result. You can also get a test from a health care provider for a more accurate result.

Review the list of COVID-19 tests to see if your test expiration date may be later than what is on the box.
