Breast Cancer Frequently Asked Questions
There are many risk factors linked to breast cancer. The two most common—being a woman and getting older are beyond your control. But some things, like exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting
your alcohol intake, are within your power.
Women of average risk for breast cancer should have a clinical breast exam and mammogram every year starting at age 40.
Some women may have a higher risk of breast cancer due to age, genetics or clinical factors. For these reasons, screening may be recommended earlier or more frequently. Talk to your health care provider about when and how often you should be screened.
Tests for breast cancer include
- Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (2D and 3D mammograms)
- Breast Ultrasound
- Breast Biopsy
- Breast MRI
Most breast cancers don’t cause any symptoms in the early stages. Without screening, there is no way of knowing you have it.
The good news: when detected early and the cancer has not spread, the five-year survival rate for beast cancer is 99%.
Getting screened every year is very important. It helps your health care provider find small changes in your breasts that may indicate cancer.
All appointments with the Women’s Wellness Connection include an initial breast exam and review of your health history. Additional testing will be referred to one of our community partners.
A clinical breast exam is a physical exam done by a health care provider. Your provider should carefully feel your breasts and underarms for any changes or abnormalities (such as a lump). They should visually check your breasts while you are sitting up and physically examine your breasts while you are lying down.
A mammogram is a screening tool that uses X-rays to create images of the breast. These images are used to find early signs of breast cancer such as a dense mass or clusters of calcium.
Mammography is the best screening tool for breast cancer used today. It can find cancers at an early stage, when they are small (too small to be felt) and the chances of survival are highest.
Cervical Cancer Frequently Asked Questions
A cervical cancer check is recommended for all women between the ages of 21 and 65.
Cervical cancer is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent with regular screening tests and follow-up.
Two screening tests can help prevent cervical cancer or find it early:
- The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for pre-cancers or cell changes on the cervix that might become
cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately. During a Pap test, your doctor scrapes and brushes cells from your cervix, which are then examined in a lab for abnormalities. - The HPV test looks for viruses that can cause cell changes. It involves testing cells from the cervix for infection that may lead to cervical cancer.
If you are 30 or older, you may choose to have an HPV test along with your Pap test. Talk to your health care provider about what screening is best for you.
While cervical cancer often does not show symptoms, you may notice
- Heavier or longer periods
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Unusal vaginal discharge
- Pelvic pain
In advanced stages, or when cervical cancer has spread, additional symptoms may include
- Changes in bowel habits
- Difficulty or pain urinating
- Backaches
- Sudden fatigue
- Weight loss
- Loss of appetite
