EPA’s SepticSmart program is a nation-wide initiative to share information on the proper care and maintenance of septic systems and encourage public stewardship in caring for these wastewater treatment systems. The SepticSmart program provides a wealth of online resources for homeowners, local organizations and government leaders to facilitate an understanding on:

  • How to properly care for and use your septic system,how simple septic maintenance can save you money and protect your property value.
  • Why maintaining your septic system can protect your family’s health and the environment.
  1. Think at the Sink!
    Learn what not to put down your kitchen sink (such as fats, oils, or greases), how to properly dispose of food waste and how to use cleaning supplies in moderation.
  2. Don't Strain Your Drain!
    Learn about the importance of using water efficiently, staggering water use of water- based appliances and using energy efficient appliances.
  3. Keep It Clean!
    Learn about the importance of testing your well water, and its relationship to your septic system.
  4. Shield Your Field!
    Learn about your septic system’s drainfield, including how it works, and tips to take care of it.
  5. Protect It and Inspect It!
    Learn about a typical septic system inspection, how often an inspection should be performed and considerations for advanced systems.
  6. Don't Overload the Commode!
    Learn about what can be flushed down the toilet, and what should be thrown in the trash.
  7. Pump Your Tank!
    Learn about a typical septic tank pump-out service, and how a septic tank works.

Adams County Health Department (ACHD) Supports Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment’s Recent Action to Protect Clean Air for All

Today, the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) announced the largest state enforcement package against a single facility for air pollution violations to Suncor refinery in Commerce City. Suncor must pay at least $10.5 million toward penalties and projects due to air pollution violations from July 2019 through June 2021. This action is a step toward holding Suncor more accountable for past violations and requires the refinery to take steps to prevent future violations.

Adams County Health Department Reports First Death of the Season from West Nile Virus Infection

Adams County Health Department (ACHD) officials confirmed the first death from West Nile virus, an adult resident, within the county this year.

West Nile virus is spread to people through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Most infected with the virus do not have symptoms. However, one in five could develop flu-like symptoms, which typically begin two to 14 days after exposure. Serious, potentially deadly neurologic illness occurs in fewer than one in 100 infected people.

Adams County Health Department and Human Services Department Working Together to Prevent Residents From Losing Health Insurance

After more than a three-year pause, the Department of Health Care Policy & Financing (HCPF) has resumed the standard eligibility renewal and disenrollment process for Health First Colorado (Colorado’s Medicaid program) and Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+). The priority for the Adams County Health Department  (ACHD) and Adams County Human Services Department (ACHS) is to keep residents covered and to connect disenrolling members to affordable health coverage.
