Maternal Child Health Program

Child Fatality Review Virtual Meeting
Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 1 p.m.

The Child Fatality Prevention Act establishes the Colorado Child Fatality Prevention System (CFPS), a statewide, multidisciplinary, multi-agency effort to prevent child deaths. CFPS is housed at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) in the Violence and Injury Prevention - Mental Health Promotion Branch of the Prevention Services Division. The CFPS is based on a public health approach to the prevention of injury and violence-related fatalities of children ages 0-17 that occur in the state of Colorado.

Through individual case-specific reviews of these deaths, specific risk and protective factors are identified that can be mitigated or enhanced through best practices and evidence-based interventions to prevent infant, child, and youth deaths. State and local partners implement and evaluate these interventions to prevent future fatalities from occurring in Colorado.

The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) program is funded through the Colorado Title V Maternal and Child Health block grant. The program helps to assure access to quality maternal and child healthcare services, prenatal and postpartum care, screenings for all children, access to primary and specialty care for children and youth with special healthcare needs, coordination of care, and reduction infant and maternal mortality.

Through a statewide community health assessment specific to maternal and child health, Colorado has identified seven priorities for 2021-2025. For fiscal year 2022-2023, Adams County has chosen to focus MCH efforts on two of the priorities: improving access to supports and reducing racial inequities.

These seven priorities are anchored by racial equity, community inclusion, and moving upstream within systems. The three major health impact areas include behavioral health, access to care, and nutrition security.

The MCH team sits within the Health Equity and Strategic Initiatives Division within Adams County Health Department and focuses on systems-level change.

Maternal and child related direct services that the Adams County Health Department provides include the HCP ProgramNurse-Family Partnership, Nurse Support, Women, Infants, & Children (WIC), Sexual Health, Breast and Cervical Cancer screenings, and Immunizations.
